Just wanted to share a personal experience (as a sci-hub user) here to complement the post. Why am I Sci-hub user? Because I come from a developing country, from an university with limited access to major scientific papers databases, and I do research with almost no funding.
I've recently published a paper in one of high-end journals, despite all the institutional limitations me and co-authors have faced. How did we managed that? Simply because Sci-hub gave us access to latest theoretical advance in the field, and rest of the Internet gave us access to bunch of free tools for doing our work.
So I joked with my co-authors- should we mention Sci-hub in the list of acknowledgments next time (where now stands that the research is conducted with no funding)?
This would be highly disliked by the publishers but would reflect the current situation. Internet pirates helped me more than my institution and academic system.

I was invited to submit a paper to the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in the MDPI family. The journal has an impact factor now of 3.257 and our paper was very professionally treated. Well peer reviewed and rapidly published. While I think that Beall's list is useful, in some instances he goes well over the top and in the end he is losing credibility. Two years ago many of my colleagues rated his list highly but no longer; now we deal with requests on a one by one journal basis. Beall is not as far as I know a life scientist and many of his inclusions appear to be based on his gut instincts.

I have been following your fight for open data and better access to research data for quite some time. It is a great inspiration for me as I have done a lot of research myself and in my opinion the entire publishing system needs to rethought. It comes out of a pre internet era and there are so many issues with it. Lastly, they make a lot of money on publishing public founded research which is not acceptable.

Thanks for all the great work you have done!
